Wow, this is very depressing. Perhaps many people don’t want freedom. Perhaps freedom is too heavy a burden. Perhaps it is easier for many people to surrender control over their lives to an ideology or a leader. Freud wrote a book called “Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego”which explains, maybe better than anything else, the phenomenon of surrender to a cult leader (Jones, Trump). Perhaps, after all, democracy can’t survive because of human nature. Maybe John Adams was onto something. Robby

I don't mean to further depress us, Robby! I do think that our hope may lie in a renewed commitment to moral behavior -- something that would remind us that lying and cheating aren't really appropriate approaches to governing. Can that come from a rejuvenated faith community? I don't know; there may be too many limitations in the creeds of our forebears, since they were shaped by societies that didn't understand science and didn't face the complexities we do. IN our remaining time on earth, though, it may be that we just have to keep trying to out-organize and out-vote the immoral minority.
