Thank you for this piece. I recently returned from Edinburgh with a copy of Murdo Macdonald's, Patrick Geddes: Intellectual Origins, (a gift from my host) so I can appreciate your thoughts and insights.

Fabulous. I barely scratched the surface of this guy’s range. I need to know more about him.

Timely post, Rex. I’m not sure that we can make most Americans care about food journalism any more. I say this as a “reformed” journalist who care very much about the need for an independent press. Whatever the next successful form of reportage looks like, it has to come from the ground up.

Good point, Al. Thanks for that "ground up" idea.

BTW, I love a well-placed typo: You suggested that it's hard to make folks care about "food" journalism, which is the one thing everybody in fact likes: recipes! I know you meant "good" journalism.

Typo is my middle name. 🙄

Rex,

As I read you current opinion this morning, I was interrupted by MSNBC's live broadcast of the Marion County Record incident which included an interview with the attorney involved in the case. As usual, your thoughts were both timely and relevant. Thanks!

Thanks, Steve. I haven't noticed if Fox News has covered Marion County. Probably unlikely, since it doesn't involve Hunter Biden or brown-skinned migrants.

As usual more good solid basic thinking. A Rex Smith trade mark I find. As a result I am going to restart my subscription to the Gazette. TU was enough thought! However Schenectady is MY community. TU does a good job, but. Thanks! Stay Safe

I'm happy to hear of support for a local paper. Digital subscriptions are so inexpensive that it's really a good deed to sign up.
