The media and its platforms- social, mainstream, citizens band...whatever - also play a role in fostering the irrational and disproportionate fear of criminality by “others.” Like the “stranger danger” faux narratives, this feeds paranoia and distrust that way too many seek to capitalize on for their own purposes. Sadly, you can’t fight emotion with facts.
