"History is a dialog in the present, with the past, about the future" (Douglass Adair). One of my favorite quotations about my profession, which many of my colleagues and I trot out whenever people dismiss the past as irrelevant. For example, NASA superstar and former RPI President George Low refused to emphasize RPI's heritage because he said that the Institute was focused on leaving the past behind and creating a new and better future. One of those "think outside the box" and "new paradigm" positions. I tried to tell him that Harvard makes a lot of money by growing ivy on its old buildings and celebrating its alumni, but he wouldn't listen. Nice post, Rex. In case you didn't know it, the Pattisons of Troy are related to Garfield.
